Today’s Resolution: Eat Your Daily Servings of Fruit

My mom just got off a few days of the “fruit diet”, and from the stories I’ve been told… well… I’m won’t be loading up on strawberries and bananas anytime soon, despite how much I love fruit. However, since it’s Monday and lots of us spent the weekend cheating on our “diets”, today is a good time to start a new week with a healthy glow and some all-natural sugars. Your daily recommended fruit consumption is two to four servings, which in fruit-speak this is about half a cup per serving, or a tennis-ball sized piece of fruit.

Today’s Resolution: Resist an Impulse

We all have urges. Sometimes you need chocolate. Or a glass of wine. Or you want to yell at the loud guy on the bus who’s berating his employee over the phone. Or you want to berate your own employee. Like I said, we all have urges and impulses that more often than not tend to be unhealthy. So today’s resolution is to resist an impulse so much that it gnaws at you. We all need practice in the art of self-control.

Today’s Resolution: Redesign a Space You Treasure

Change is hard but inevitable if your goal in life is to keep moving forward. Today your goal is to redesign a space that you treasure. This might be something as small as your desk or a special cabinet, or it could be as large as your office or the trunk of your car. Look online for inspiration, or take inspiration from your heart.

Today’s Resolution: Pretend You’re a Reality TV Star That Needs to Improve Their Ratings

A tip of the hat to whoever submitted this fun resolution in our recent survey!

Today’s Resolution: Re-Discover Humility

Humility is a trait that not everyone has, but most every person on this earth requires and can benefit from. Today, let loose a little bit and let yourself do something that you wouldn’t normally do. Maybe it’s karaoke, or maybe it’s something more subtle like admitting you’re wrong. Your resolution today is to be humble and spend more time looking at life from the perspective of those around you.

Daily Resolution: Do 15 Sit-Ups (Or More, If You Can)

They say that this small little exercise can give a big boost to your self image and sense of accomplishment. If you did it every day, you’d be working towards some great abs. But today this goal, especially if you don’t usually do sit-ups, should put a little hop in your step. If you do sit-ups every day, then today do 15 more!

Today’s Resolution: Celebrate World Whiskey Day!

Pour a glass, or make a cocktail. And in celebration, we’ll share our favorite Sazerac recipe (although we do know the very original was made with Cognac):

Sazarac Cocktail Recipe from Esquire

  • 1 sugar cube
  • 2 1/2 ounces rye whisky
  • 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • absinthe
  • lemon peel

Glass Type: old-fashioned glass

Instructions

In an Old-Fashioned glass (not a mixing glass; it’s part of the ritual), muddle a sugar cube with a few drops of water. Add several small ice cubes and the rye whiskey, the Peychaud’s bitters, and the Angostura bitters.

Stir well and strain into a second, chilled, Old-Fashioned glass in which you have rolled around a few drops of absinthe (no substitute really works, but you can try either a mix of Pernod and green Chartreuse, or Absente) until its inside is thoroughly coated, pouring off the excess. Garnish with a twist of lemon peel (some insist that this be squeezed over the drink and discarded).

Today’s Resolution: Go People Watching and Create Imaginary Backstories

Everyone has a story. Even you. Yet in a crowd of people, everyone has one story and that’s the direction they’re headed in or out of the crowd. Today, take some time to people watch. You don’t need to go far, though. Find a bench, or sit at your desk and observe. Then, if you feel so inclined, imagine a backstory for these strangers as if you’re a detective in a spy film. Hey, it’s Monday. You need a little silly in your life today!
